Steorn, an Irish company, claims to have produced a groundbreaking (we do not use this word lightly) technology which is based on the interaction of magnetic fields and produces free, clean and constant energy. If the claims are true, the new technology will enable a significant range of benefits, from the convenience of never having to refuel your car or recharge your mobile phone, to a genuine solution to the need for zero emission energy production. It will also provide a secure supply of energy, since the components of the technology are readily available. Steorn’s technology appears to violate the ‘Principle of the Conservation of Energy’, (energy can neither be created nor destroyed, it can only change form) considered by many to be the most fundamental principle in our current understanding of the universe. Fully aware that its claims will be considered bunkum by anyone who has graduated kindergarten, Steorn today issued a challenge to the global scientific community to test its free energy technology. Steorn has placed an advertisement in The Economist to attract the attention of the world’s leading scientists working in the field of experimental physics. From all the scientists who accept the challenge, twelve will be invited to take part in a rigorous testing exercise to prove that Steorn’s technology creates free energy. The results will be published worldwide.

he technology is in a constant state of development. The company has focused for the past three years on increasing power output and the development of test systems that allow detailedanalysis to be performed.

Steorn is making three claims for its technology:

1. The technology has a coefficient of performance greater than 100%. 2. The operation of the technology (i.e. the creation of energy) is not derived from the degradation of its component parts. 3. There is no identifiable environmental source of the energy (as might be witnessed by a cooling of ambient air temperature).

The sum of these claims is that the technology creates free energy.

This represents a significant challenge to current understanding of the universe and clearly such claims require independent validation from credible third parties. During 2005 Steorn embarked on a process of independent validation and approached a wide selection of academic institutions. The vast majority of these institutions refused to even look at the technology, however several did. Those who were prepared to complete testing are claimed (by Steorn) to have all confirmed the company’s claims; however none will publicly go on record.

Here’s a brilliant idea that we think needs recognition, particularly given that water restrictions are starting to become commonplace in western countries. The Propelair WC uses just 1.5 litres per flush compared with the 9 litres used by an average UK toilet– in one household alone, this can save 5 tonnes of water per month. The Propelair system looks like a conventional toilet and is used in the same way. It has a sealable lid that allows air to force waste and a small amount of water from the bowl, giving improved flushing and drainage performance. The system generates its own air, requires no ancillary equipment and connects to existing plumbing, but can also connect via flexible waste-pipes for awkward installations … and uses one sixth of the water used by a conventional toilet system. The inventors is seeking sanitary ware manufacturers and investors with a view to putting the Propelair system onto the market. It is also seeking a partner for a large-scale UK-based trial of Propelair in a commercial or public building.

Garry Moore, Managing Director of Phoenix Product Development Ltd, says: “As properties across the country face the prospect of compulsory water metering and developers face tighter restrictions on water use in both residential and commercial buildings, the importance of water conservation technology becomes paramount.”

Phoenix believe that water conservation technology like Propelair offers a cost effective and more easily deployed solution to water shortages than major capital investment in new water supply facilities.

Moore adds: “The Water Research Centre estimates that even a modest uptake of the Propelair system could create a saving of 140 million litres of water daily, the same volume of water that Thames Water’s recently proposed desalination plant in East London could produce in a day.”

bet if you take a look around your desk, you’ll be ashamed at just how much disparate junk is scattered all over the place: empty CD cases, scissors, that Scotch Tape you’d been looking for three weeks and had been in front of your eyes all along, etc. Well, don’t throw all that crap. A motorized cooler sounds pretty cool, even cooler when you find out that you can ride it. Don’t be one of those losers who have to walk and carry their own coolers, get yourself a Cruzin Cooler!

Now you can get around with all your food and drink without having to walk, what a combo! You can get either a gas or electric model. To decide which one is for you, you just need to decide how much distance you need to cover. The gas versions have a range of 30 miles, while the electrics don’t have a range stated. There are two models of each, one goes 13 MPH, the other goes 15 MPH. The electric models only need to be recharged (max 6 hours), while the gas models take EPA approved two stroke (33 cc) or four stroke (39 cc) (mixed with oil). If you’re on the larger size, a Cruzin Cooler will hold up to 300 lbs, that’s counting the cargo.

This isn’t a gimmick, the Cruzin Cooler is a real scooter and also stores food + drink. It will hold up to 24 twelve ounce cans plus ice. That’s enough for a good day at the beach, boat, or park.

The prices are fairly reasonable. The 300 watt electric and 33cc gas are $349 and $449 respectively. The 500 watt electric and 39 cc gas are both $499.

If you’re deciding between the gas and electric, here’s what I’d suggest: get the gas if you want longer distances and don’t mind a bit of noise, get the electric if you don’t mind a short range scooter but want to be fairly quiet. Always go for the more powerful one, it’s bigger and better.

We’re a little short on details about this particular product, but we figure it’s got some potential. It allows you to essentially “jumpstart” a cellphone with a dead battery, simply by attaching it to another one with some charge. You don’t even have to wait until the battery has been charged: you can make your call right away, with the other cell thusly joined.

There’s even a handy LED to help you out in the dark. Now, this is really all we know. No word on price, availability, potential market, or what. And yes, we’re aware of hand cranks, and other emergency cellphone power solutions. We just thought that a gadget that made cellphones mate was really kinda cool.

The Thanko BINOCA01 is a Binocular with a 2 Megapixel CCD sensor and unlike its Korean cousin it can shoot videos too. The compact binoculars is powered by two AA batteries and can take pictures in various resolutions like VGA 640 x 480, SXGA 1280×1024, UXGA 1600×1200 and QXGA 2048×1536. It can record video in AVI format in CIF res at 30 fps and in VGA res at 15 fps. Thanko has surely packed it with features as you can use it as a webcam too. But to keep the cost down there is no LCD screen or memory expansion slot and you are stuck with the onboard 32 MB of memory. It connects to the host via USB for transferring files.

The Thanko BINOCA01 measures 116 x 67 x 37 mm and weighs 215 grams and i available for 146,800 Yen ($ 145) in Japan.

Picking up a week’s grocery from the local supermarket can sure be tiring as you walk from section to section pushing the heavy shopping cart. A supermarket in Shenyang China has come up with an ingenious solution it has laid traintracks in its five floors. So you can ride down in your private cart for picking up groceries. The customers are loving it as it is less tiring and stressful than walking. However it does have one disadvantage if you miss out anything you have to repeat the ride all the way through the store, with the kids around I am sure such incidents will be fun.

Wonder when we can have a Wal-Mart with traintracks.

Researchers over at Microsoft have developed TouchLight, a touch screen technology that combines off-the-shelf components to create a unique and interactive affair. Several different types of cameras are positioned behind a holographic projection material screen recording your movement. Approaching the screen, you then see a projection of yourself or whatever you have touching the screen. This opens up several different types of applications, not least of which is the normal touch screen activities.

This is really one of those stories where seeing is believing, so be sure check out the fruits of Redomnd’s research and start thinking about ways to abuse it like we do with a Xerox machine. – Nicholas Deleon
